In the intricate dance of life, our collective actions add fuel to the fire that is global warming. The beauty and chaos of the flames is tragically compelling; yet, there is power within us to spark change. Can we succeed in lighting an intentional backfire before we spiral out of control?

Burn Baby, Burn is the latest full-length creation from Côté Danse, making its Toronto debut at FFDN 2024. The work explores fire as a symbol of passion and intensity, the very qualities humanity must harness to address climate change. Nine performers captivate the audience with their dynamic range of movements that encompass extreme physicality, serene delicacy, untamed exuberance, and moments of levity.

Bursting onto the Canadian dance scene in 2021, Côté Danse is the collaboration between Choreographer Guillaume Côté and Producers Etienne Lavigne and Anisa Tejpar.  Principal Dancer with the National Ballet of Canada and a performer of global renown, Côté’s choreographic language is praised for “blending classical and contemporary techniques, which brings out a gesture that is both aesthetically and theatrically significant.”

Burn Baby, Burn’s original score is by Amos Ben-Tal, artistic leader and co-founder of OFF Projects, a creation and performance platform for works in dance, music and text.

Burn Baby, Burn is presented at The Fleck Dance Theatre, Harbourfront Centre, Oct 5 at 7:30 PM and Oct 6 at 2:00 PM & 7:30 PM

FUN FACTS:

  • Burn Baby, Burn is inspired by Côté’s young son’s question, "The planet is burning. Why aren't the grownups doing anything?"
  • World Premiere of Burn Baby, Burn will be presented by Festival des Arts de Saint-Sauveur on Aug 2.
  • Côté and FFDN' Renette and David Berman Filmmaker-in-Residence Vikram Dasgupta created an FFDN original film of Côté Danse’s X(Dix) (FFDN 2021) which is currently available on the festival’s official streaming partner Marquee TV.
  • The director’s cut of X(Dix) premiered for FFDN Unparalleled and our partners at Soho House in January 2024.
